The Ultimate Optical Hashtag Guide

STOP USING #GLASSES AND #SUNGLASSES IN YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA CAPTIONS IMMEDIATELY! Read on to learn why...

About Hashtags

Instagram hashtags work by organizing and categorizing photo and video content. Using relevant, targeted hashtags on your posts and stories is still one of the best ways to get discovered by new audiences on Instagram which can translate to more customers for your business. When used correctly, Instagram hashtags can help you attract more customers and patients.

How to Use Them

Using #glasses has been used 24.5 million times, meaning the likelihood of your post ever being seen by someone who searches that hashtag is almost impossible. As well as, using too many generic industry hashtags won’t get you new customers either.

While the most popular hashtags on Instagram have been used millions of times, that doesn’t mean you’re going to get a ton of likes and comments simply by adding #glasses, #sunglasses or #happy to your posts. Because of their high usage, your post will get pushed far down in the hashtag list almost immediately and probably won't be seen. (Unless you have a ton of followers.) Instead of using the most popular Instagram hashtags, it’s better to find and use hashtags that are smaller, more niche and are more relevant to you. Using too many generic industry hashtags won’t get you new customers either. Your ultimate goal (I hope) for social media is to engage current customers and land new customers- using generic hashtags will never accomplish this goal for you. You need to target people in your area. Utilize local hashtags that your ideal customer/patient would use.

The key to using hashtags, is to use hashtags that are popular but not the most popular otherwise, your post will not be seen. The sweet spot is 5,000-900,000 uses. Use a mix of hashtags on the lower end, middle and higher end of that range. Click on any hashtag to see the number of hashtag uses or use the search tool to see the numbers of potential hashtags.

One last thing: Instagram limits you to 30 hashtags per post. If you try to use more, your photo or video will post without a caption at all.
